📜 History
Blackjack descends from the 18th-century French game “Vingt-et-un” (twenty-one). The name “blackjack” arose in the US when a bonus was offered for a jack of spades with an ace of spades.
In 1962 mathematician Edward Thorp published “Beat the Dealer”, showing that card counting could reverse the house edge. The book permanently changed both the game and casino rules.
🌍 Where popular today
Blackjack is the most-played table card game in the world — a fixture of every casino from Las Vegas to Macau.
Online it is also one of the most popular live-dealer games, because skilled play measurably lowers the house edge.
🎯 Rules
Goal: get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Face cards count 10, the ace counts 1 or 11.
You receive two cards and may “hit” (draw another) or “stand”. The dealer must draw to at least 17.
📊 Odds & maths
With optimal basic strategy the house edge drops to around 0.5% — the lowest of any common casino game.
A natural blackjack (ace + ten-value card) pays 3:2. Play without strategy and the house edge quickly rises to 2% or more.
✨ Beginner's guide
Never played blackjack? Remember the rule of thumb: on 12–16 against a high dealer card, hit; on 17+ always stand.
