📜 History
Baccarat likely arose in 15th-century Italy and reached the noble courts via France. The name derives from the Italian word for “zero” — the value of tens and face cards.
For a long time it was seen as a game of the elite. Only the “Punto Banco” variant made it accessible to broad casino audiences in the 20th century.
🌍 Where popular today
Baccarat is by far the most important game in Macau, generating a large share of all casino revenue there.
In the US and Europe it is popular mainly in the high-roller area. Online, live baccarat has opened the game to every stake level.
🎯 Rules
There are two hands: Player and Banker. You bet on which one will be closer to 9 — or on a tie.
Cards 2–9 count their value, tens and face cards count 0, the ace counts 1. Only the last digit of the total matters. Whether a third card is drawn follows fixed tables.
📊 Odds & maths
The Banker bet has the best odds, with a house edge of around 1.06% (including the 5% commission on wins). The Player bet sits at about 1.24%.
The Tie bet pays 8:1 but carries a house edge of roughly 14% — mathematically it is the worst choice.
